Flavio Cucchi
Considered by critics as one of the most interesting European guitarists of the international scene, Flavio Cucchi has given hundreds of recitals in America, Europe, Asia and Australia in addition to participating in radio and TV shows for some of the biggest worldwide broadcasting corporations (the BBC, RAI, ZDF, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Televisa Mexico, Television corporation of Singapore, Radio Raga, and others). As a soloist, he has played in over 30 European cities with orchestras such as the Orchestra Della Toscana, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Radio Brno Chamber Orchestra, the Guitar Symphonietta, the Pormeriggi, Musicali di Milano, the Orchestra Toscanni, the Orchestra dell ATER, and the Basque National Orchestra.He has performed at important international festivals such as the Festival Estival – Paris, the Festival la Habana – Cuba, the Festival M.Ponce – Mexico, the Opera Festival – Ireland, the Bath Guitar Festival – England, the Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte do Montepulciano, the Omaggio a Segovia – Florence, the Singapore Guitar Festival, Gendai Guitar – Tokyo, Todi Arte Festival, etc. He won first prize at the National Competition of Contemporary music, (Chairman Goffredo Petrassi) and second prize that international competitions in Gargnano and Alessandria Specialist in contemporary music, Flavio is one to the first Italian guitarists to popularize Leo Brouwer’s compositions. |
He is also very active in the domain of chamber music, and has played the world premiere of Sestina d’Autunno by Petrassi and many modern masterpieces as Boulez “Marteau sains maitre” (at the Scala di Milano), Henze’s ”Cimarron” etc. He has also participated in several operas by Bussotti, Berio etc.Many composers (Alvaro Company, Nuccio D’Angelo, Anthony Sidney, Oliviero, and recently Chick Corea) have been inspired to write for Flavio. It can thus be said that he has contributed to enriching the repertoire of classical guitar. |
| He is a professor at the Coservatorio Mascagni of Livorno since 1986 and Masterclasses at: -Gendai Guitar – (Tokyo Japan) -Indiana University – (Bloomington – USA) -Texas Tech University (Lubbock – USA) -Arizona State University (Phoenix – USA) -Universidad Veracruzana (Vera Cruz – Mexico) -And other musical organizations in Europe and Asia He has often been a jury member at important international competitions, such as the ARD competition – Munich, Concurso M. Ponce – Mexico City, E pujol – Sassari and others. Recently the American Poet Yusef Komunyakaa (Pulitzer Prize 1994), dedicated to him “Ode to the guitar” presented at Geneva International Festival of Poetry, June 2004. |
